Pitch Shifting

The Input Pitch Shift control, located under Controls in the Transform window, allows you to adjust the pitch of your input audio before transformation. Use the + and - buttons to shift the pitch up or down by one semitone at a time, or if the Sweetspot Analyzer is available, you can drag the bar representing the input vocal left and right.

Why Pitch Shift Matters

Matching your input pitch to your target model's range is crucial for achieving natural-sounding transformations. When your input's pitch range closely matches the target AI model's range, the transformed vocal will have clearer pronunciation, is less likely have artifacts/glitches, and will generally sound most realistic.

Understanding Vocal Ranges

Different voice types typically occupy different pitch ranges:

  • Typical male voice range: A2-C4
  • Typical female voice range: E3-G5 (about 5-6 semitones higher)
  • Professional singers often have wider ranges

Best Practices

Match Your Target Range

  • Your input vocal should fall within or close to the target model's vocal range
  • For male-to-female conversions, a pitch shift is typically needed unless the input was sung in a higher male register
  • For female-to-male conversions, consider recording in a lower register to minimize required pitch shifting

Smaller Shifts Work Best

  • While the pitch shifter can handle larger intervals (up to ±12 semitones), and can often sound very good, smaller shifts are mostly like to produce more natural results
  • For optimal quality, try to sing as close as possible to your target range during recording
  • Use pitch shifting for fine-tuning (2-3 semitones) rather than dramatic range changes

Recording Strategy

  1. Before recording, check the target model's typical range
  2. Record your input in a register that minimizes the needed pitch shift
    • Male singers targeting female voices: Try singing in a higher, comfortable register
    • Female singers targeting male voices: Use your lower register while maintaining good tone
  3. Use pitch shift for the final adjustments to perfectly align with the model's range

Pro Tip

Some DAWs have a feature to temporarily change the pitch of your song, allowing you to sing within a comfortable range for your voice, and then move everything back to the original pitch. In Logic Pro, this is called Varispeed (Speed and Pitch mode).

As an example, you can temporarily shift your entire project -3 semitones, sing comfortably in a high register, then remove the shift and export your vocal. This keeps your vocal in-key and allows you to sing in a register that wouldn't normally be reachable or comfortable.

Common Scenarios

Conversion TypeTypical Shift RangeNotes
Male to Female+3 to +12 semitonesStart at +5 and adjust
Female to Male-3 to -12 semitonesStart at -5 and adjust
Same Gender±0 to ±3 semitonesMinor adjustments usually sufficient

Remember that these are starting points – your optimal shift may vary based on your voice and the target model.
